The following happened one day in June 1951 when the DPRK was fighting a fierce war against the US invaders.
The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung gave instructions on forming a sports delegation with sportspersons from the Korean People’s Army and sending it to the Third World Festival of Youth and Students.
At that time the situation of the front was going from bad to worse as the enemies were making preparations for large-scale “summer and autumn offensives.” Although every soldier counted on the front, Kim Il Sung said that the point of sending a sports delegation was not simply in winning matches and the appearance of the fighting Korean youth in the festival is in itself of significance.
Some days later, as regards this matter, he issued an order in his capacity as the Supreme Commander of the KPA and learned in detail about the training of the basketball players and made sure that conditions ranging from training equipment to lodging and boarding were fully provided at the best level.
The DPRK players fully showed the mettle and fighting spirit of the Korean youth at the Third World Festival of Youth and Students.
Afterwards, he issued an order of the Supreme Commander to form the KPA Sports Club, saying that it was needed to train the core force from now on in order to develop sports in the country, and took a measure of recalling excellent sportspersons from all KPA units.
Therefore, the KPA Sports Club came into being consisting of about 10 events including football, basketball, volleyball and boxing.
One day in May 1952, he saw a women’s volleyball match and said that we should humble the US imperialists in the war and demonstrate the Korean spirit before the world in sports as well.
During the war the Korean athletes grew up to be reliable pillars who would shoulder the future of the country’s sports. They fully demonstrated the courage and mettle of the Korean sportspersons by defeating the US team at the Second World Women’s Volleyball Championships in September 1956.
