The Mt Paektu area registered as a global geopark has many geological sites. Lake Chon is one of them.
The lake is a large, deep lake formed in the volcanic crater on the summit of the 2 750-metre-high mountain.
Its bedrock is composed of trachyte, basalt, liparite and tuff, and its bottom is covered with gravels, sand, mud and others.
Its main water sources are atmospheric precipitation and groundwater coming from its bottom.
It is the highest, deepest and largest in water volume of all the natural lakes in the DPRK.
Covering an area of 9.16 square kilometres, it is 2 190.15 metres above sea level and 14.4 kilometres in circumference.
The maximum depth is 384 metres, the average depth is 213.3 metres, and the total water volume amounts to 1. 955 billion cubic metres.
The lake remains frozen for seven months a year and the ice is about 1.5 metres thick.
The transparency of its water is 16 metres.
What is special about the lake is that its water level rises and falls in a year within the range of about 1.6 metres.
Its water is not only clear and clean but also contains various microelements.
The peculiar alpine ecological system, beautiful natural scenery and mysterious natural phenomena in the volcanic crater of Mt Paektu owe much to the creation of the lake.
The lake is under special protection in the DPRK as a natural monument.
