Ryanggang Province located in the northern inland region of Korea has a number of climatic features distinct from other provinces.
The eastern, western and southern parts of the province are hemmed in by the Hamgyong, Puksubaek, Rangnim and Pujonryong mountains, while its northern part is open to the continent. Therefore, cold air of the continent flows in freely from the north, but warm air from the south does not easily move into the province, so it is very cold in winter and cool in summer.
As it has the richest forest resources in the country and diverse natural and geographical conditions, the province has many indigenous plants.
The indigenous species grow in number, going from lowland to highland, over 80 percent of them being alpine plants distributed in Paektu and Namphothae and other high mountains.
Typical are Dryopteris coreano-montana, Picea tonaiensis, Betula cyclophylla, Tilia koreana , honeysuckle and Euphorbia hakutosanensis .
Dryopteris coreano-montana grows in the highly humid forest land in and around Mts Namphothae and Pukphothae and Pegae Hill.
Euphorbia hakutosanensis grows in the arid soil around coniferous forests.
Thesium refractum occurs in the dry land of the Mt Paektu area.
The province also abounds with rare plants whose habitat is limited due to changes in ecological environment.
In addition to the aforesaid indigenous plants, there are ordinary species growing in limited areas: Phyllitis japonica, Sabina sargentii, Picea intercedens, Betula microphylla, Drosera rotundifolia, Polygala sibirica, Kalopanax pictum, Pinguicula vulgaris, Sasamorpha purpurascens, Viola websteri, Sagittaria natans, Gentiana barbata, Oxycoccus microcarpus, Cotoneaster integerrima medic and Celastrus orbiculatus .
Indigenous and rare plants are under the protection of the country.
